The Winter Olympics are under way and preachers everywhere are going to be looking for sermon illustrations .  Not me!  At least not yet, but…

Watching the competition this afternoon I am struck by the analogy: Your best effort decides your fate, not your worst. In 5000m long track speed skating you skate one race and that effort decides how you finish.

ln life we tend to think that our worst moments are what gets us in trouble but Isaiah 64: 6 says our best is what is rejected by God.

All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.

Isaiah 64: 6

In our best efforts to clean ourselves up there are the seeds of our own destruction. God is holy and perfect and if you think you can be good enough to meet God’s standard you will fail in one of two ways.

  • You will try to be holy and fail, despair and give up, or
  • you will try to be holy, fool yourself into thinking you made it and then take pride in your accomplishment.

Our standard of excellence is Jesus Christ and we put our hope in Him, and the completed work of salvation in the cross.
